Meet The Artist

Harris Ribut

Harris Ribut was born on September 8, 1951, in Carey Island, Selangor. He did not receive any formal education in the arts. He began working as a graphic artist in several publishing companies around 1976 until 1990. During that time, he also transitioned into journalism, with his last position being Sub Editor at Kumpulan Karangkraf.

At the end of 1996, he took a brave step to become a full-time painter, even though it was quite late in life—at the age of 45. For 24 years at the Jalan Conlay Artists’ Village, besides earning a living, he also managed to make a name for himself when he created the “Fat Ladies” series in 1997, inspired by his late mother, who was plus-sized. His paintings of large women were well-received by collectors and buyers both in Malaysia and abroad. His works even gained the attention of Henry Butcher Art Auctions, which featured them for auction sales.

Throughout his 30-year painting career, he has exhibited and participated in over 100 exhibitions and events across the country, including international invitations to Singapore, New Zealand (2000), and Sweden (2006). His paintings have become part of the permanent collections of royal families, Malaysian embassies abroad, banks, corporate companies, museums, art galleries, art collectors, and private individuals.
